B2 @ Berlinale 08

por Juliana González

There are many things you need to be at Berlinale:

1. Presseakkreditierung

2. Plenty of time

The first one allows you to watch all the movies without effort. The trick is that either you have to get up early to be 10 for 9 at the movies door or you just chop up your day and can watch a movie around 4pm. Anyway, for 40 EUR for 10 days it looks like 4 EUR/day. it is 4 times what a vast mayority of the planet get to live with. On the other hand it is much cheaper than buying single tickets (around 6 to 11 EUR). There are "hard" measures this edition:

a. No pictures. Only acredited photographer can take them. (Ouch!). So it means, you won`t probably see any Madonna's pic in her debut as movie director. Otherwise the Berlinale organization is willing to take my accreditation away...

b. Personalized tickets so you won't be able to pass one to a colleague :(

The second one is THE MUST because there are too many films distributed in 3 main categories:

a. Competition: movies and actors looking forward taking a Gold and Silver Bear home. At noon Martin Scorsese's Shine a light (out of competition) will be shown.
b. Forum: for young talents. This year many of them mix at least 2 languages. It is a kind Zeitgeist. It is also the place for experiment. We'll see how pleasurable and playful they are.
c. Panorama. The opening is Rusalka (Mermeid) I am going to watch it tonight and tomorrow I will tell you my impressions about the second work of Anna Melikian. This year the programm is planty of stories about young people and their struggles to get along and survive reality. As its name implies it is a wide spectrum of situations and cultures that do not necessarily interact between them, but that show how each one is busy figuring out the reality. A footnote: 1/3 of the movies are directed by women. Albertina Carri is one to be followed because of her work as one of the leading figures of Nuevo Cine Argentino.

...and there is more: Shortfilms, Deutsche Kino, Restrospective (This time with Buñuel), specials (around food...and indeed food will be served at Martin Gropious 50 bucks for a menu + film. But a real meal: no popcorns or tortillas with jalapeño dip.

It is all for now.
